A pigment is a general term for one of a large group of materials that selectively absorbs or reflects certain wavelengths or colors of light. By selecting the correct pigment, we can add a specific color to a base material, like white paint for example. If we add something like oxides of iron to a white paint base, we get paint with a reddish color similar to rust. More pigment results in a more intense color. The pigment is held in suspension in the paint base, and it gives the base (which is often white) a characteristic color which we design by selecting the correct pigment.
