A pilgrim can also be someone who makes a pilgrimage, an almost universal religious practice of traveling to and worshipping at a sacred place. Its goals include the sanctification of the worshipper, the affirmation of their place within a community of believers, and the expiation of sins through the rigors of the journey (esp. the Christian Crusaders).
