Best Answer

They are electrically charged species composed of more than one atom

Examples:

  1. Monoatomic: Cl- chloride , S2- sulfide, Na+ sodium
  2. Polyatomic: NH4+ ammonium, CO32- carbonate

Edit:

It is a tightly bound group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and behaves as a unit.

Monoatomic = 1 atom such as the Cl- ion.

Polyatomic = more than 1 atom such as Cl2 or H2O which are diatomic and triatomic respectively.
The means of polyatomic is a molecule, ion, radical formed from 2 or more atoms.
