There are a number of things in computing that is referred to as a "port"... he's the ones that spring to mind:

A physical connector on the computer that you can plug things (like power, keyboards, printers, USB devices) into.

A logical connection point for network connections. When your computer makes a connection of a network (be it local or the internet) it uses both a local port and a destination port. These ports have numbers and common applications on the Internet and private networks run on what's known as a "Well Known Port". So, web traffic runs on port 80...

The act of taking a piece of software designed for one computer type and making it work on another type of computer. E.g. Have they ported Firefox to mainframe yet?

It depends on what you mean by "Port"...

A port could refer to the physical connection such as an Ethernet port.

But most likely you are referring to a port #. In networking, it refers to a particular identifier in the data packet that helps network protocols route that data to the appropriate application. (This occurs at the Transport Layer of the OSI model).

For example, when a piece of data arrives at your computer from the internet and is tagged to Port 80, your computer knows to hand that piece of data to your web browser.

A port, to put it simply, is like a door that information uses to pass in and out of your computer. Each port has it's own number assigned to it, (HTTP uses port 80, for instance). Different programs and utilities use different ports to get information in and out of your computer. There are 65,535 different ports that are available for that information to use. Some online games use specific ports in order to pass information to and from your computer, it makes it easier for your computer to process the information, and prevents "traffic jams", allowing the information to move more smoothly and not get jumbled up.
