It's exactly the same as a contract phone - except that, instead of paying a monthly fee, you buy credits which are applied to the phone's account. It simply means you're paying for your calls 'up front' instead of getting a bill at the end of the month.

With a traditional phone, you pay a deposit up front and every month you get a bill representing the number, length, and type of phone calls you've made. You may accidentally overspend, and you may incur late fees. A prepaid cell phone is different. It's not actually the phone, but the minutes that are prepaid. You buy a phone and a what is basically a debit card good for a certain money amount. As you make calls, the money is subtracted until there is no value left on the card. Some cards may be reusable, in that you place a call to the company and add more value (with a credit card). With others, you simply buy a new card. The prepaid phone cards are only good for a particular company; they are not interchangeable.

Are you looking for a phone that may be prepaid or a service to call with prepaid payment in general?

Basically any phone can be turned into a prepaid phone - it depends on the kind of SIM card you are using and who issued it, so best would be to look for the provider that best fits you and then ask him for a prepaid service with the according SIM.

Sometimes phones are locked to certain providers - make sure that won't be a problem. Providers often also have special offers for phones coming with their service offers.

If you're home/using your laptop when you're out much I suggest you use Skype, though. You can also charge that with prepaid cards (like paysafecard for example which you can get at gas stations etc.) and it's imo the best way to call anyway since it's cheap (even free if you're calling someone who also has Skype at his computer), using the internet and thus being very portable, too (any hotspot will do) and it's still very safe since you don't have to enter personal data when charging the account up with e.g. paysafecard.

If you got a smartphone with a flatrate inet connection that alows for you to install the skype app you can also call using skype on your phone which might be cheaper than doing normal calls.

Typically, you purchase a device from a prepaid provider and then pay-as-you-go for minutes.

Many people are attracted to prepaid over postpaid because...

· There are no contracts and no credit checks

· You can discontinue service at any time without facing termination fees

· You can control costs by purchasing minutes on a pay-as-you-go basis

Be aware, though, there is a use-it-or-lose-it caveat about minutes. With many prepaid services, once you activate a card, you must use up your allotted minutes in a designated time frame, which can vary from 1 month to 90 days, depending on the provider. If you have any minutes left over once the time window has elapsed, you run the risk of losing those minutes. That's why it's important to know roughly how much you are going to use your phone.

If you're looking for a recommendation - I use Straight Talk, and like them. They are prepaid, but have all the newest devices. (Just got the iPhone 5!)

A prepaid mobile phone is a type of billing plan for a mobile phone. Unlike the regular billing, which is paid at the end of each month with the amount of money owed for calling, texting, internet, and data usage; a prepaid plan is a plan in which you pay at the beginning of the month. The difference is, you get to decide how much you want to pay. For example, if you pay $30.00: over the course of the month you are limited to calling, texting, internet, and data usage that will only cost $30. If that limit is reached, you cannot access these features for the rest of the month.

Note: Depending on the phone, there is often a minimum amount that you can pay at the beginning of the month (for example, you must pay a minimum of $20).
