A precipitation solution is just like asking what is a precipitate; it is an insoluble solid compound that forms out of the water solution in an aqueous solution.

Ex.) AgNO3(aq) + KCl (aq) ----> AgCl (s) + KNO3 (aq)

Precipitation reactions can have many different causes. They usually occur when the product formed in a reaction has a hgher concentration than it solubility.

A common example of this is when you react transition metals in solution with a sodium hydroxide solution. The resulting product is insoluble in water and is therefore a precipitate.

So basically, if the product of a reaction is insoluble in water, you have a precipitation reaction.
