I would suggest that it is for the purpose of giving meaning to something that may or may not have happened. The story of Robin Hood is sometimes reffered to as a myth as no positive proof of his existance has been found, we however like to think that he existed as a legendary English outlaw of the 12th century; said to have robbed the rich to help the poor.

Myth is somewhat difficult to define. There are both negative and positive connotations of myth. A myth can be loosely called a story with a meaning handed down from pre-scientific times.
In myths we can see the common threads that run through human existence. Myths provided earlier human communities with information, they taught, they provided cultural identity, they guided and uplifted, they exposed human folly, and of course, they explained the unexplainable in terms that humans could understand.
Some think religions are based on myth although the believer in any one religion also believes that all the others are based on myth but not so their own closely held beliefs. It is noteworthy that when someone wants to express the idea that another person has lied about something or something is untrue, they call it a myth.

∙ 12y agoMyths weren't written, they were told. At some point someone did write them down, but it wasn't like we write stories today.
The point of myths, like any religious story, was to both set an example for people to live by and to explain an otherwise unexplainable event. The gods themselves were the personifications of elements, forces of nature, and emotions.
