Best Answer

The quilt top is the uppermost layer of the quilt, overlying the batting (inside layer that gives the quilt most of its warm and depth) and the quilt backing. The quilt top is the layer that is made of pieces of different fabrics laid out to form a pattern or picture, and is often heavily decorated with special stitches.

There are some quilts, particularly wedding quilts, where the quilt top is a single piece of fabric and the decoration is made solely in the quilting stitches that bind the three layers together.

Is polyester a good quilt backing for a cotton quilt top?

I generally try not to use both cotton and polyester in the same quilt. The main reason is that the different fibers tend to react differently to washing/drying and wear. Over time you can end up with a quilt that is distorted in shape and size. That being said, using a polyester or blend in for the back and cottons for the top is not as troublesome as mixing the fabrics within a pieced top. You will experience fewer problems with distortion if the poly is only on the back. If the quilt is ornamental and won't be washed much you may be okay using the poly backing. If the quilt will be used a great deal then stick with all cotton.

How do you use a quilt in beddings?

Quilts are used in the same way blankets and bedspreads are used on beds. They are laid over the top sheet, so that one sleeps between the sheets, rather than directly under a quilt. This protects the more fragile quilt from wear and tear. A fancy or "best" quilt also can be used as a decorative bedspread and removed from the bed when turning down the covers before sleeping.
