What is a saber saw?

Answer:
The Sabre Saw (sometimes referred to as a "jigsaw") is a powered hand saw and is a member of a family of powered saws known as Reciprocating Saws.

Like all reciprocating saws, the cutting blade of a Sabre Saw uses a reciprocating (up and down) motion to achieve the cutting action. Other types of powered reciprocating saws include the Scroll Saw and the Sawzall®.

The Sabre Saw is generally a one-handed power saw consisting of a main housing that usually incorporates the handle or holding surface and contains the motor, cam, rod, and gearing necessary to drive the narrow, toothed blade that protrudes from the bottom of the tool.
The housing is usually mounted on top of an adjustable base or foot assembly with a center opening that allows the blade to pass through. The base/foot is designed to support the weight of the saw and stabilize the tool as it rests and slides on the surface of the stock being cut.

Sabre Saws are generally used to cut relatively thin flat or sheet stock such as plywood, hardwood, wallboard, laminate, and many other sheet materials up to an inch thick. Sabre Saws are also used to cut smaller gauge sheet metals.

the design of the Sabre Saw (and reciprocating saws in general) allows it to be used to cut curved, ornate, and more intricate cuts as opposed to power saws that are intended only to make straight cuts such as the Circular Saw.
