A shorkie is a mix between shih tzu and a yorkie!

This wonderful breed is commonly known by the following names: Shorkie, Yorkietzu, Yoshi,

Shorkie Tzu mix, Shih Tzu Yorkie mix.

Description: The Shorkie is a Toy Breed that originated with us 18 years ago here in the United States. Shorkie Puppies are known for their playful and sweet natured temperament.

The Shorkie puppies can be very small. The Teacup Shokie is not an accepted term with Shorkie Club Of America. The term "TEACUP" is merely an adjective to describe a smaller than standard size of the Shorkie breed. The standard size is up to 4-11 lbs. The Again "TEACUP" this is simply a term used to describe a Shorkie that has been bred to be smaller than standard size.

The Shorkie is probably the most popular of all the designer mix breeds. Now that we have founded the Shorkie Club of America we are on our way to establishing the Shorkie as a breed of its own. The Shorkie breed is known for it's different color coats. Some of the colors that they can have are as follows: The black and tan, gold with black mask, solid gold, solid red, party spotted colors of gold and white or black and white, and even chocolate

Some owners allow their Shorkie coat to grown long and to the ground. This is possible because both the Yorkie and Shih Tzu are non-shedding and have the possibility of their coats growing all the way to the floor. This does take some work and you will need to brush your Shorkie at least every two to three days and more often if they get dirty. There are probably more owners that give their Shorkie a puppy cut instead of going thru all the work of keeping the coat brushed and free of tangles . They also look like a puppy their whole life in a puppy cut. My personal favorite!

Temperament:

The temperament or personality of your Shorkie will depend on a variety of factors. Their are two factors that I consider to be the most important when it comes to the Shorkie breed.

The most important factora in my opinion is the temperament or personality and health of both parents. Both Mom and Dad need to be sweet natured with no bad personalities in their backgrounds either. Many breeders do not care about what they are breeding and just put to dogs together to breed. Temperament is a trait that is bred and is genetic. This is where it is important for you to contact at least 10 past puppy parents and ask for pictures..

Also Talk to the Shorkie breeders vet. If you cannot talk to their vet before you put down a deposit in a puppy RUN! Make sure it is a an actual vet too! Google the vet and get and address for the Vets Office

The number two most important factor is socialization of the Shorkie puppies. This begins at birth and continues until the Shorkie puppy goes to it's new home. Each of the Shorkie puppies need to be well socialized with children and adults alike. I consider both of these factors to be equally important. All Shorkie Club of America Breeders are guaranteed to be in home breeders that do not run kennel facilities. They are home inspected by a vet that the Shorkie Club of America pays for to ensure we deal with breeders that raises their puppies and dogs as apart of their family. Many breeders say they are in home breeders but have 7 or 8 different breeds they advertise on line and have 30 or 40 dogs they own. This is not a home breeder and we are against such puppy manufacturing operations. So it is very very important for you to do your research on any breeder and talk to their past puppy parents and their vet! We are very very strict about our guidelines on becoming a breeder in the Shorkie Club of Amercia and we stand firm on our beliefs. This is for the betterment and development of the Shorkie Breed.

Health concerns do exist in the Shorkie breed and any breeder that is not genetically testing her dogs will not for any reason be allowed to breed and register their puppies in the Shorkie Club of America. Genetic testing should be important to any breeder you are dealing with to ensure you that you are not going to end up with a genetic nightmare. OFA testing for hips heart and knees, Cerf testing for Eyes, and bile acid and thyroid testing for all adults. Although the Shorkie Club of America is free to join and open to all breeders you will find that many do not want to spend the thousands of dollars it take in genetic testing to ensure you are breeding a healthy dog.

You will find they sell their Shorkie puppies much cheaper for about $750 to $800 or cheaper because they do not care about the adults they are breeding. Any breeder that discredits genetic testing is JUST CHEAP! and does not want to do the very most for the dogs they are breeding, the puppies they are producing or care about the Human hearts they may be breaking because they didn't do the testing.

We have personally spayed and altered boy dogs that did not pass all the genetic testing...BUT THEY LOOKED PERFECTLY HEALTHY. Most puppy parents just fall in love with that furry little face...just to be drawn in by a breeder that did the very least.

The adult weight of the Shorkie tends to be in the 6 to 9 lb weight range. There is not a height established for this breed at this time but they are very short and compact.

The Shorkie breed can live in many different environments. If you live in a hotter climate I suggest you get your Shorkie a puppy cut, especially if they spend a lot of time outside in the sun. They will be much more comfortable. If you live in a colder climate then you should invest in a Coat or Sweater for your Shorkie. Most Shorkies will be comfortable in an apartment, condo, house or country setting.

Exercise: It is important to give your Shorkie puppies proper exercise. If you have a fenced in yard you can let your Shorkie run loose but I suggest you be out there with it to make sure they don't find a place to get out. Most Shorkie puppies can get enough exercise just playing and running in your apartment or house but every dog that I've known loves to play outside. Most Shorkies don't mind getting dirty either. They will play in the dirt, grass and leaves with the best of them. They are truly the funniest little characters ever. But do not be fooled. They make the best cuddle bugs ever and want up in your bed every chance they get.

Life Expectancy: The life expectancy of Shorkies are 14-19 years or more with proper diet and excercise and of course good vet care. . It is important to make sure your puppy is up to date on all it's vaccinations, de-wormings.

Group: The Shorkie is from the Toy Dog Breed Group.

Overall the Shorkie is popular designer Dog Breeds both in the United States and Canada and it is leaving pawprints on hearts all over the world.

Please be careful of the many scammers on the internet today. You should only purchase your Shorkie from a reputable breeder who is well established online and has years of references and a vet you can contact before you adopt your puppy. Never pay for your Shorkies with western union or money gram or PayPal.. Never purchase a Teacup or Standard size Shorkie puppy for a price that seems to good to be true. It is either a scam or a puppy that is not well bred.

For example if someone is willing to sell you a Shorkie puppy for Only $300.00 to $500.00 with shipping and everything included. In most instances this will be a scam. It costs over $200.00 to ship a Shorkie puppy and much more for vaccinations and de-wormings, not to mention all the money involved in taking care of Mom and Dad.

Here are a few things to watch out for when looking for a Shorkie Puppy.

These are in no particular order:

Look for the symbol of the Shorkie Club Of America

There are some breeders that say they have Official Shorkie Websites but are in no way affiliated with us. They use the term to scam you and think you are getting an Official Shorkie Puppy when you are not at all

I have a shorkie. He looks like a Teddy Bear so we named him that, though we call him just 'Teddy'. Does your shorkie remind you of something, or does it have a certain color that you like? If you had a chocolate shorkie, maybe a good name would be Mocha or Hershey.

Shorkie is a breed of dog so there are many places to find information on Shorkies. The local library is one source and there are many breeders of Shorkies that could also provide information about the breed.
