  • travelers moved much more rapidly between cities, countries and continents
  • villages grew into towns and cities
  • people bought manufactured goods in stores
  • people lived in crowded townhouses/apartment buildings and tenements

The Industrial Revolution refers to a time of rapid change from an agricultural society to an industrialized one. It occurred in Europe from the late 1700s to the early 1800s. Essentially, it was a transformation of the society that occurred when the economy (previously manual labor-based) changed to being manufacture-based.

The first industry to industrialize was the textile industry.

People began to use production strategies such as assembly lines and mass production, in order to produce goods in a shorter time, with a smaller cost, both to the producer and the consumer. This resulted in the creation of factories, as well as in urbanization (people moved into cities from the countryside).

The Second Industrial Revolution began in the mid-1800s, and was the result of technological advances, such as steam-powered ships, railroads, and (later) the internal combustion engine took root. While the First Industrial Revolution occurred mostly in Europe (especially Great Britain), the United States was also important in the Second Industrial Revolution.

These movements caused large-scale changes in society, and the issuing in of a new era. They led to some problematic social conditions, such as the poor treatment of workers in factories, bad living conditions in cities, and child labor. Eventually, many laws were made in the attempt to counteract these problems.
