this is something that happens on earths surface....

. The ground simply collapses down the now dry rivers that were once filled with water. These are the first real signs of a major drought.

A collapse of superficial deposits into a void that has formed within the underlying bedrock.

Sinkholes are basically what they sound like -- holes which suddenly appear in the ground. They can be large enough for houses to fall into or only a few feet across.

Sinkholes can from from a variety of mechanisms but the most common image that people see on TV is when surficial soils drop into an empty cavity below them. This is called a cover collapse sinkhole.

Also called sinks , cenotes ,dolines or swallets.
