A stacked column chart allows each column to represent more than one value. So if you wanted to see how sales you had in four regions, but wanted the four regions in a single column, then you would use a stacked column chart.

A stacked chart can show several values in the same bar or column to show how much of the total each shows up. So you could have 3 salesmen and instead of showing one bar for each of their totals, have one bar consisting of their 3 totals, as if the 3 bars were stacked on top of each other, hence the name.
