A swallow:

- is a bird. Swallows are colorful, acrobatic flyers that catch insects on the wing. There are many species, among them the barn and tree swallows. The purple martin is the largest swallow. They belong to the family Hirundinidae.

- is a bodily action. A swallow is a complicated maneuver wherein food is slipped into the digestive tube (esophagus) while the epiglotis is closed so the food doesn't accidentally slide down the breathing tube (trachea).

- is a measurement. A swallow is a small amount of water, liquor or other liquid that is only large enough for one gulp.
