Carnegiea gigantea is a tall cactus that's native to the southwestern United States of America. The cactus' common name is the giant saguaro cactus. The plant also is native to northwestern Mexico.

The saguaro cactus is often the symbol of the desert. However, the saguaro as a symbol is misleading as it is only symbolic of part of a single desert - the Sonoran Desert. The prickly pear would be much more representative as it is found in all North American deserts.
