A tetanus shot is an injection that vaccinates the recipient from an acute bacterial disease also known as tetanus or lockjaw.

A tetanus shot contains the tetanus toxoid - which is an inactivated form of the toxin Clostridium tetani.

The vaccination against tetanus is normally included in a combined vaccine called DTaP that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping-cough (pertussis).

You should be vaccinated for the tetanus toxin to prevent dying from tetanus. Tetanus is caused by infection with the bacterium Clostridium tetani, and this bacterium is present throughout the world. If you have any incidental penetrating wound (the classic example is stepping on a nail), you risk having C. tetani in the wound starting to multiply and release tetanus toxins into your body. The tetanus toxin causes your muscles to lock into rigid paralysis, an extremely painful and potentially fatal condition.

It prevents developing things like "lock Jaw" when you are injured by cuts, dog bites and several other injuries that seriously break the skin. They recommend you have a tetanus shot every ten years especially if you are in a trade where minor injuries with metal cuts happen.

When you injure yourself, the dust which enters your open wound contains tetanus spores .These can germinate & cause tetanus, usually a fatal illness. Tetanus injection creates active immunity in the body. In the event of an injury, if you have taken a tetenus shot previously, the body fights back, & hence the body is protected.

A tetanus shot is a vaccine. A vaccine uses either dead bacteria (in this case tetanus bacteria) or weak live bacteria to program your immune system to recognize the bacteria, and then kill it off whenever it is seen again. The tetanus vaccine must be repeated every 10 years. If, however, you step on a rusty nail or get scratched by a rusty piece of metal (common sources of tetanus) and it has been less than 10 years but more than 5 years since your last shot, you should go ahead and get another. Tetanus is a disease that causes all of your muscles to permanently contract and produces death. The tetanus vaccine is usually paired with another vaccine - such as diphtheria. That is the d in the Td vaccine.

It prevents you from getting a bacterial infection when dirt or soil enters a cut. This could also be known as TETANUS or lockjaw.
