Abraham Louis Breguet invented this complication from an idea a prominent English horologist first came up with. The tour billon is basically a revolving cage in which the main spring is held. The main spring is what regulates the flow of time in the watch clock. If for example you tipped your watch upside down the effect of gravity on the main spring would cause inaccuracies in your time piece. To counter act this the tour billon was born. Remember this is many years ago when materials and technology were way off what they are now. Tourbillons are now redundant as even the most basic manual watch utilises materials and build qualities that surpass the mere effects of gravity. Tour billions are incredibly technical and only the best watch makers can build them, the man power, skills and time involved in its construction mean its only the best watches that use them. It's effectively an incredible( but useless) decoration. An American company markets tour billon watches for the average purse, their cheapest model a snip at six thousand dollars.
