It operates like a pipette and is usefull for lifting small items by suction from the bottom of the tank. There are also other things it can do like moving small fish (fry) etc but that is up to you and your imagination and needs. I have one but rarely use it prefering to use other things like my clean hands, syphon tubes and nets etc.
