These two plates held both ends of the various gear shafts in position. However, watchmakers found it difficult to align all the tiny gear shafts at once into one top place and this led to the evolution of the bridge. The bridge was a top plate separated into two or more parts that held the gear shafts in place. If your pocket watch has jewels, they will be fitted into the bridge and pillar plate to reduce friction on the moving gear shafts.
