A waxing crescent is a phase of the moon that takes place after the new moon. From the Northern hemisphere, the "crescent" can be seen on the right side of the moon, while a waning crescent is seen on the left side.

I wondered about this when I read in a book about an early evening crescent moon rising. May be romantic but, it doesn't seem possible to me. A waning crescent moon would have to rise early in the morning before sunup because a waning crescent moon setting is visible toward the evening sunset or early in the evening. After sundown, the waning crescent moon would set. Whereas, a true full moon would rise about the same time the sun set.

The new moon is caused by the moon being in almost the same part of the sky as the sun, so there's no reflection. As the moon pulls ahead of the sun, more and more of the moon reflects light from the sun. So the crescent moon (cusps to the east for waxing, west for waning) is usually noticed more towards dawn, and the waning moon after sunset.

A waxing moon rises before sunset. A waning moon rises after sunset.

midnight, just like the sun is at it's highest point at noon.

Answer #2:

The time of day at which the moon is highest in the sky depends on its phase.
Only the Full Moon is highest at midnight.

-- The new moon is close to the sun, so is highest at noon.

-- The first quarter moon is 1/4 of the sky behind the sun, so is highest at sunset.

-- The full moon is opposite the sun, so is highest at midnight.

-- The last quarter moon is 3/4 of the sky behind the sun, so is highest at sunrise.

==> A waning crescent moon is highest in the sky between sunrise and Noon.

The moon goes through a complete cycle of phases ... displaying all of them ... in 29.53 days.

It's in the waxing crescent phase for 1/4 of that time, or just a bit more than 1 week. It's the

week immediately following the New Moon.

The moon is a waxing crescent from New Moon until First Quarter, and a waning crescent from

Third Quarter until the next New Moon.

So it's a crescent from Third Quarter until First Quarter, and not a crescent from First Quarter

until Third Quarter. Each of these is 1/2 of the cycle of phases, or 1/2 of 29.53 days = 14.77 days .

Note: Although it's true that the moon's period of revolution is increasing, the answer has

not changed appreciably in the six days since this question was last posted and answered

on WikiAnswers.

I think it only lasts for, like, 1 day. Or maybe 2. It is definitely either 1 or 2 days.

What is a shrinking moon?

The correct term is a 'WANING Moon. From Full Moon to the next New Moon, the moon is said to be WANING. From Full Moon to Last Quarter is it a WANING GIBBOUS Moon. From Last Quarter to the next New Moon it is a WANING CRESCENT Moon. In very clear weather you will see the waning crescent Moon, with the 'ghost' of the Moon's full circle. In old lore it is said to be 'The old moon, with the new moon in her arms'.

When the Moon appears to be shrinking it is called?

A WANING Moon. An increasing Moon is called a waxing Moon. NB From New Moon to first quarter it is a WAXING CRESCENT Moon From 1sr Quarter to Full Moon it is a WAXING GIBBOUS Moon From Full Moon to Last Quarter it is a WANING GIBBOUS Moon From Last Quarter to next New Moon it is a WANING CRESCENT Moon.

What is the next moon after the full moon?

After the full moon, the moon wanes (gets smaller) through the waning gibbous phase, to the last quarter moon, the waning crescent, and finally the new moon.

How does the crescent phase that precedes the new moon differ from the crescent phase that follows the new moon?

A waning crescent is the phase in which the visible (illuminated) Moon is shrinking, leading to a New Moon (all dark). The open end of the crescent is facing away from the rising sun.A waxing crescent is the phase following a New Moon during which more of the visible face is being illuminated, leading toward a Full Moon. The open end of the crescent is facing away from the setting sun.(These directions do not vary by hemisphere as do the conventions of left and right.)

What are the phase of themoon and what do they look like?

The first phase is a new moon, that is when you can't see the moon at all. Next is a waxing crescent, that is when the moon looks a bit like a banana. The next phase is a half moon (which in space it is actually a quarter moon but in Earth it looks like a half moon) is when the moon is right down the middle. Next is a waxing gibbous, which is when it is nearly full (3 quarters). The next phase is the full moon which is when you can see all the moon reflecting from the Sun. The next phase is a waning gibbous is when the moon is three quarters again but it is facing the other way because its getting smaller. The next phase is the half moon again but facing the other way. The next phase is a waning crescent Moon which is when the moon looks like a banana again but facing the other way. The next phase is back to the new moon when you can see nothing again. That is all the phases of the moon and it take about 28 days to do that while orbiting the earth.

What moon phase occurs 3 days before the new moon?

waning crescent

How many days will it take to go from third quarter to waning crescent at 315 degrees?

"Third Quarter" is a moment in time. As soon as that moment has passed, the moon's apparent shape becomes a waning crescent immediately, and remains so for the next week. The same shapes are seen at the same times from anywhere on earth. We don't understand the reference to "315 degrees".

What the difference between waxing moon and waning moon?

"Waxing" is growing BIGGER from one night to the next."Waning" is shrinking SMALLER from one night to the next.

When does the waning phase occur?

"Waning" means that less and less of the moon's lighted side is visible from Earth as time goes on. That's what's happening during the entire two weeks from Full Moon until the next New Moon.
