"Chronic ethanolism" is the same thing as chronic Alcoholism. Coroners often use the phrase "chronic ethanolism" on a death certificate when a person has drunk himself to death, probably because it avoids the social baggage attached to saying someone was an alcoholic. Acute ethanolism is another way of saying alcohol poisoning. Alcohol, when drunk to excess, becomes very toxic in the body when the body cannot disburse the alcohol fast enough. Acute ethanolism can happen to anyone who drinks to excess, even the first time drinker.
