What is all about the stress-strain relation in tension?

Answer

When you pull on something, it stretches a bit. Even materials you think are rigid, stretch if enough force is applied. The numbers are very important since they say a lot about the characteristics of materials.

Of course all this depends on the thickness of the thing that stretches, so engineers use units that include the cross-sectional area.

Strain (Think INch) is the deflection or distance the material stretches.
Stress (Think pRESSure) is the force/cross-section, perhaps PSI.
