Well, hamsters are allowed to have some fresh fruits and veggies.

Fruits - Apples, sweet types, no seeds; Banana; Blackberries; Blueberries; Cantaloupe; Cherries, pitted; Cranberries; Dates; Figs; Grapes; Kiwi; Kumquat; Loganberries; Mango; Melon; Papaya; Peach; Pear; Plums, pitted; Raspberries; Raspberry plant leaves; Star Fruit; Strawberries; Watermelon.

Veggies - Alfalfa; Asparagus; Avocado, skinned, pitted; Broccoli; Carrots; Cauliflower, leaves and stalks; Corn-on-the-cob; Cucumber; Green beans; Mung beans; Okra; Peas; Spinach; Squash; Soybean sprouts; Sweet Corn; Sweet peppers; Sweet Potato; Turnip; Water Chestnuts; Watercress.

Herbs - Basil; Parsley; Sage.

Other - Chestnuts; Mealworms

If your hamster avoids these foods at first, it's because they are picky and avoid new food. Don't worry they will eat later. :)

Caution: These foods are treats for hamsters and should not have more than a small (human) handful a day.

Pelleted foods offer a completely balanced diet, and for this reason I generally recommend pelleted diets. As explained below, a hamster can be picky with loose mixes resulting in an imbalanced diet. However, pelleted diets are a bit monotonous and some hamsters will refuse them. A pelleted mix can be supplemented with a variety of other items, as long as the pelleted food makes up the bulk of the diet to ensure well-balanced nutrition.

Loose Mix/Seed Diets

It is important to pick a loose mix diet that contains a variety of foods such as grains and dried vegetables along with some seeds -- and some loose mixed foods also contained a balanced pellet food as part of the mix. As mentioned previously, the biggest problem with loose mixes is that hamsters can pick and choose their favorite bits, which could result in a dietary imbalance. When feeding a loose mix, make sure your hamster empties the food bowl before adding more as this is the best way to make sure your hamster does not just eat his or her favorite parts.

My recommendation: try to get your hamster to eat a pelleted diet, and supplement it with a variety of other foods such as human foods. If you like, you can even sprinkle a bit of a loose mix diet in with the pellets to add a bit of variety.

Fresh Foods and Treats

You can feed your hamster a variety of human foods, as long as you stick to healthy human foods and limit the treats to no more than about 10 percent of the diet. Skip the the junk food and stick to healthy things like whole grains and fresh vegetables and fruits (in moderation, or diarrhea may result). Store-bought treats such as yogurt drops and honey/seed sticks are generally sugary, and I recommend avoiding them.

Note: since dwarf hamsters are somewhat prone to diabetes, it is prudent to avoid much sugar in their diet, so avoid fruits as treats for dwarf hamsters.

Hamsters usually love peanut butter, but it must be fed carefully (as with any other sticky food) because it can get stuck in their cheek pouches and cause severe problems. A very thin layer on a piece of wood is okay as an occasional treat, but peanut butter must be given with caution.

Pellets but the packet would say EXTRAUSION and on the botton Pellets those are VERY good for your hamster it give your hamster Soft shiny coat, Strong bones and Healthy Growth and it helps yourhamster's teeth be smaller by time and that's good because if the teeth were not short/small and it's long your hamster will not be able to eat well and will die and if that does happen bring it to the vet to cut it down, but NEVER cut your hamsters teeth.

If your planning giving your hamster Mixed one with like corn, sun flower seed etc. don't buy that because it will make your hamster fat/chubby sometimes that's cute but your hamster will be lazy and your hamster will pick it's fav. and will not get every single thing it needs for a healthy, happy, long life.

But treats are good any kind of treats you give your hamster from the pet store are good.

Fresh veggies are good since they provide something hard to chew on in addition to fiber and nutrients. Most of the prepackaged hamster treats are loaded with sugar so you have to read carefully as dwarf hamsters shouldn't be given sugar as the lean towards developing Diabetes. Syrian or golden hamster also should have their sugar watched but they aren't quite as predisposed to getting diabetes so they can have a little bit of sugar. There are treats that I buy for my Russian dwarf hamster that I get in Walmart. They're called 'Cheesy Chews' and look like a wedge of Swiss cheese. She loves these. You can also get them some 'raw' peanuts without salt. Make sure you don't give them almonds as problems can develop. Just make sure that you always check the sugar content and only give 20% of their food each day as snacks/treats.
