Ammonia is a compound of hydrogen and nitrogen, with formula NH3. Under normal circumstances it is a very toxic gas. It is a common precursor for many chemical products, particularly fertilizers and explosives. What you buy in the store as "ammonia" is a very dilute solution of ammonia in water. When dissolved in water, it forms a very alkaline solution (it is actually ammonium hydroxide, NH4OH) that is an excellent solvent for non-polar molecules like oils. It doesn't leave a residue behind, since both the components can evaporate completely. That's what makes it such a good glass cleaner.
