Assuming the coin is circulated, the 1889-O Morgan dollar is a slightly better date of the series. Most coins show heavy wear. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. In general retail values for low grade coins are $32.00-$39.00, better grade are $40.00-$43.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $44.00-$60.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer

1883-S is both a common date and a key date coin in the Morgan Dollar series. Let me explain : These coins were widely circulated, and so most became heavily worn. Therefore, in heavily worn condition, these coins are common. However, since they were so widely circulated, the number of remaining coins that did not get circulated is very low -- making this a key date in the upper grades. Details on how to grade your coin can be found here : http://www.coincentric.com/GradingMorganSilverDollars.htm Values : In GOOD to VERY FINE condition, this coin is worth $8 to $12 In EXTRA FINE condition, it's worth about $25 In ABOUT UNCIRCULATED condition, it's worth about $110 In UNCIRCULATED condition, with numerous marks/abrasions, it's worth about $500 In UNCIRCULATED condition, with few marks/abrasions, it's worth about $2,000 to $3,000 In UNCIRCULATED condition, with almost no marks/abrasions, it can be worth $16,000 or more!
