"America" is a region referring to the two continents, and the "United States" or "United States of America" is a country. America, when used appropriately, refers to the Western Hemisphere consisting of North America, Central America, and South America.
"America" is often inappropriately used interchangeably with "United States." While many in the United States of America and other countries generally refer to the country as Americaand US residents/citizens as Americans, it is a misappropriation of the term in this context.
America is not solely the United States. Yes, citizens, such as Californians and Tennesseans, of the United States of America are Americans; however, so are Canadians, Mexicans, and Brazilians, and the like. Furthermore, many people elsewhere in the Americas resent the misappropriation of the term in this context and, thus, this usage is frequently avoided.
