What is an Americanism?

An expression that would be typically used by an American. Usually in contrast to an equivalent term by another English speaker. For example, where an American would say, "I'd just come down the elevator from my apartment when I saw a truck run into the trunk of my car," a Brit would say, "I'd just come down the lift from my flat when I saw a lorry run into the boot of my car."
