How to Write An Acrostic Poem:

Write the letters of your word or phrase down the left-hand side of your page, with one letter on each line. You can skip a line between letters if you want to leave room to write more than one word.

Now, think of words which begin with each letter - don't try to make a poem yet, just write down all the words you can think of which will describe or explain Talia. Use a thesaurus if you have trouble thinking of words! If you need more room, continue the list on another page!

Once you have a list, start thinking of how to write your poem. Which words or phrases are the best ones to describe or explain Talia? Which will make the clearest mental image? Which will make your readers understand Talia the best?

This is a very basic technique used to help jump-start the writing process. For example, you can write a poem using the word 'mother', for next Sunday, Mother's Day, or on any name. You would probably not use your own name, since the idea usually is for such a poem to be an appreciation of the person whose name is being used. Not many serious poets would use it. There may be examples where poets have used it in very subtle and hard to detect ways, but I'm not sure why a poet would bother.

This is doggerel, and a spoof to be sure. My mother is 91 and going strong, and this is NOT about her at all.

M is for the many times you fed me such good food;

O is for the other days your cooking spoiled my mood.

T is for the tender care you sweetly gave to me;

H is for the heck I caught when I climbed up the tree.

E is for the evening stories you would oft relate;

R is for the roar I got when I stayed out too late.

They can be fun. Let your imagination run wild. But if you write one for your mother next week, make it ALL good, unless she has an uncommon sense of humor.
