- The type you find on an electrical good, such as a laptop charger.
- The type which is used in the national grid to get electricity through the over head power cables and into our homes.
Both transformers effect the potential difference, a STEP UP transformer increases the potential difference, a STEP DOWN transformer decreases the potential. The transformer you find on a laptop is used to STEP DOWN the potential difference from the plug socket, where as the type you find in the national power grid is used the STEP UP the potential difference created in power stations so it can efficiently travel through over head power cables.
