Behavioral adaptation is how an animal behaves in order to stay alive.

Just to list a few general examples:

  • searching for food (if an animal can't find enough, they might resort to stealing or other methods)
  • mating methods (If a method isn't working, move on to another)
  • migration paths and methods

Behavioral adaptation is the way an animal acts or behaves to stay alive. For example if the American Wigeon cannot find enough food, it will steal food right out of the bill of an American Coot, or a Snowy Egret will stand still in the water with its wings stretched out, because fish are attracted to the shade. These are ways of behaving.

sorry I just realize I gave just birds examples

An example of a behavioural adaptation in animals is the way dolphins work together to find food, often "herding" school of small fish up onto reefs and sandbars. The dolphins then take turns to feed while the other dolphins keep the fish herded.

The puffer fish "inflates" itself when a predator threatens, similar to the dragon lizard displaying its frills.

The feral horses that Columbus lost in North America adapted (in just 500 years!) to their various environs: mountain life developed shorter forelegs and thicker coats, open plains life developed longer legs and taller horses, while desert life developed thinner, shorter horses with thinner coats. Each of these groups had to adapt their behavior their environment.

The classic example, though, is Pavlov's dogs learning to salivate upon hearing a bell ring.

I made a point of giving my black lab something to eat--a snack--when we came home from work. he now expects something every time he comes into the house, even if he'd only just gone out for a few seconds by himself.

The dog learned to use my giving him a treat, a one-time-a-day phenomenon, to get something for himelf a lot more often than once a day. He pushed his limits when an advantage was first gained and seen as an advantage--dogs do think about their bellies all the time--ALL THE TIME, lol!

A chimp was shown how to fracture a rock so that a particular shaped flake was knocked off the rock--a fake with an edge sharp enough to cut through a cord tying closed a box with a treat inside it. The chimp quickly leaqrned to make the required flake and benefited from his technological advantage in adapting to the challenge the cord, box abd treat inside provided.

Soon, the chimp sought easier methods to knock the flake off, and resorted to a more simple but effective approach--hurling the rock against bigger rocks and seeking a fragment sharp enough to cut wth from the scattered debris. A second adaptation occured here--lets make things more simple than more complicated
