What is an example of a compound predicate?
Answer:
The hungry boy ate a banana and devoured an ice cream sundae 10 minutes later.
The bold part is the compound predicate. It is compound because the subject (The hungry boy) did TWO things. A key to identifying or writing a compound predicate is to look for two or more verbs separated by a conjuction: or, but, or and. So "ate" and "devoured" are the two identifying verbs.
Other examples:
The girl struggled with the heavy jug and spilled water all over the floor. "Struggled" and "spilled" are the two identifying verbs.
My friend offered to drive me home, but later changed her mind. "Offered" and "changed" are the two identifying verbs.
