These were often employed by businesses for computing balance sheets. Today, the term "computer" is applied to anything that processes data. For example, the Onboard Diagnostic Computer in a car is tasked with monitoring numerous sensors in the car, and storing and reporting problems as they arise. The computer in a digital watch counts the electrical oscillation and reports that as a given time. Even something as simple as an abacus could be considered a computer in its most basic form.
