What is an example of figurative language?

Answer

Figurative language is language that uses imagery and figures of speech to convey an idea, a feeling, or a concept. It is the opposite of literal. Literal language states something exactly as it is:

  • He loves her.
  • I am hungry.
  • You have a good idea.

Figurative language expresses things in a nonliteral way:

  • He worships the ground she walks on.
  • My belly is screaming for food.
  • You just had a burst of brilliance.
