How does a three phase separator work?

A three-phase separator is used in the oil industry to separate oil, water and gas from a mixture.

How do you separate kerosene and water using a separating funnel?

It is used to separate 2 liquids that can not be mixed such as water and oil. Water is down and oil is up, we pour both in the separator funnel, and open the tap, when water is over, close it, and viola! You've got separated water and oil! :)

How does a horizontal petroleum separator work?

Separator design can be complex. I will just cover the basics. Crude oil from a well needs to be cleaned up, that is removal water and gas, so that it can be sold. The horizontal separator has an inlet at one end, where the crude oil enters. In a three phase separator, the gas will separate from the oil due to the lower pressure in the vessel and flow out of an outlet in the top of the separator. Water is generally less dense than oil so it will settle in the bottom of the vessel. A water level controller is needed to make sure the oil does not drain out the bottom. A diagram of a horizontal separator is shown in the following link: http://www.glossary.oilfield.slb.com/Display.cfm?Term=separator Why do I say that the design is complex? A common problem is that the gas can entrain some of the oil if the velocity of gas is high in the separator. Baffles are designed to prevent this. The separator never perfectly separates the gas and water from the oil, and a staged separation system may be needed. Gas to be saleable may need to be dehydrated after separation. The water may contain oil, and need additional clean up before disposal. How do you separate crude oil from sea water?

They do it using a device called an oil water separator. Its really pretty simple. Water is heavier than oil so oil will rise to the top. That's the reason you can see the oil spill on the water in the gulf right now. If you have a container with a bottom drain and you fill it with a water and oil mixture the oil will float to the top and you drain the water from the bottom.

What would an oil separator be used for?

An oil separator is a device designed to separate well fluids produced from oil and gas wells into gaseous and liquid components. The various components have different densities and this allows the oil separator to separate them.
