∙ 11y agoAn optical drive, also known as a CD Drive or Disk Drive, is used to read CDs or DVDs. The files will be opened in Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (PC) or Media will normally be opened in Windows Media Player(PC) or iTunes (Mac). Modern Optical Drives can also burn files onto a CD!

∙ 10y agoAn optical drive is for reading and possibly writing to optical media such as a CD or DVD. It is pretty much used like any other drive in a computer. Older optical drives could only read data and could not burn disks.

This is different from a computer disk drive, or hard drive, or tape drive which stores data magnetically and uses magnets to read and write data. It is also different from a usb stick (thumb drive) or SD card that stores, reads, and writes data electronically into the device's stored memory.
Examples of optical drives are LaserDisc, CD (compact disk), DVD (Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc) and BlueRay.
The CD or DVD drive in a laptop allows playing recorded audio, music and videos on the computer. You can also install programs and read files from the device. If the optical device is capable of writing (burning) to a disc, then computer data, music and videos can be saved or copied to blank discs labeled as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW. The RW designation means that the disc is erasable and rewritable.
