There are two "black boxes" on modern day aircraft. One is the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) used to record cockpit, intercom, and pilot to controller communications. The other is the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) used to record aircraft flight control inputs, flight parameters (speed, altitude, etc.), and system performance. The primary use for both is in accident investigation. And there actually orange :)

Despite it's name, the term "black box" has become the common reference for not only one, but usually two pieces of electronic recording devices in modern aircraft. They record both flight data and the pilot's radio communications between each other (pilot/co-pilot) and ATC frequencies. The colour of any such recording device is international orange, due to the extreme need for visibility when locating it after an aircraft accident, for example a high impact crash.
For educational institutions, through the 2010 Orange Bowl, that is the University of Oklahoma with 18 (record of 12-6). The University of Nebraska is second with 17 (record of 8-9).
