They can be from either stainless steel, nickel-titanium, or the white ones from either porcelain or composite. They but a special glue on your teeth so they stick on. It does not hurt to get them on at all, and tighten them, and to take them off

Metal wired braces are made of stainless steel.
Clear braces are made of ceramic/porcelain composite or plastic material.
Gold-plated stainless steel braces are used for patients who are allergic to nickel, a component of stainless steel.
Titanium braces.
Invisalign braces are made out of polypropylene plastic.
