It is called the solstice. While the equinox means : when the most direct point between the surface of the earth and the sun's rays is on the equator. Which creates either the autumn or the spring ( depending on the time of the year and the hemisphere you live in). On the contrary the solstice means : when the most direct point between the surface of the earth and the sun's rays is on either tropics (cancer or capricorn). Thus creating summer or winter again depending on your geographical location.

Answer:

The opposite of a solstice is an equinox.

Non-technical explanation:

The solstices are the longest day and longest night of the year. Equinoxes are the days of equal daylight and nighttime.

Moderately technical explanation:

At the northern hemisphere's summer solstice, it is receiving the largest share of sunlight that it receives all year. In other words, that is the day that the northern hemisphere is "pointing" most directly towards the sun. The two solstices are at opposite points along Earth's path around the sun. If we call those the "top" and "bottom" of Earth's orbit, the points at the "left" and "right" extremes would be the points at which Earth experiences an equinox.

More technical explanation:

At a solstice, Earth's axes of rotation and revolution lie in the same plane. The equinoxes are the points at which the plane *perpendicular* to Earth's axis of rotation (ie, the plane containing the Equator) intersects the center of the sun. The two solstices and the two equinoxes are separated by 180 degrees along Earth's orbit, and the two pairs are offset by 90 degrees from each other.
