partial collapse of the left lung
a. failure of the lungs to expand Atelectasis refers to the medical condition of the partial or complete collapse of the lung.
Atelectasis is a collapsed or airless condition of the lung which may be caused by obstruction of one or more airways with mucus plugs; by hypoventilation secondary to pain or to ventilation with inadequate tidal volumes; by inadequate surfactant production; or by compression of the lung externally or the lung or bronchi by tumors, aneurysms, or enlarged lymph nodes. It is sometimes a complication following abdominal or thoracic surgery, caused by splinting. Thoracic and high abdominal surgery poses extra risks, because of the location of the incision. It occurs in pateints with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, or cystic fibrosis, and also in those who smoke tobacco heavily. Chronic atelectasis, called middle lobe syndrome, results from compression of the middle lobe bronchus by surrounding lymph nodes.
insufficient attemps at respiration by the newborn, bronchial obstruction, or absence of surfactant (a substance secreted by alveoli that maintains the stability of lung tissue by reducing the surface tension of fluids that coat the lung).
Chronic atelectasis is chronic or long-term collapse of part or all of a lung.

pneumothorax
atelectasis can result in aartially or totally collapsed lung
Resorption atelectasis
what is bilateral posterior atelectasis of the lungs
atelectasis = collapse of the lungs. posteriorly = toward the back.
Atelectasis is a partial collapse of the lung caused by failure of the parenchymal (functional) lung tissue due to disease (i.e., COPD). Pneumothorax is the collapse of the lung due to mechanical causes (i.e., traumatic injury, violent coughing).
An atelectasis is a collapse of a part or of the whole lung caused by inner factors rather than a pneumothorax.

Scarring of the lunch may or may not be deadly, depending on the severity. Subsegmental atelectasis is deadly, as it is a collapsed lung.
Mild bibasilar atelectasis is a condition where part or the entire lung collapses. It is due to an obstruction or blockage that results in the prevention of the respiratory exchange of dioxide and oxygen.
