Back trolling is a method of trolling from the bow of the the boat (rather than stern) where the boat is moving with the current, but slower than the current. The bait is norrmally rigged in a suspended state with some weight/diver below it (similar to a drop shotted configuration). The bait is therefore pulled slightly by the faster current giving a natural presentation while allowing the angler to move in the direction of the current.

Trolling depends on the species you are going for. You have to have tackle (rod/line/reel) that can handle the size of the fish and lures that can get to the depth that the fish are at. Lures and the species of fish have a certain speed that they work best trolled at. Stretches for example like to be trolled at around 3-4 knots when going for striped bass and tuna feathers like 7+ knots.
