Basal sliding is the movement of a glacier. It is caused by the melting of the glacier at the base, this melt water acts as a lubricant, causing the glacier to slide downhill. This generally only happens in temperate based glaciers, such as in the Alps, where the ground is warmer, allowing the ice to melt. Whereas in polar glaciers, the ground it far too cold so the ice never gets warm enough to melt.
