A batch file is a script type of file that performs DOS based functions. Normally used to facilitate a large job such as a copy job. Some time used to perform installations. With the advent of Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft has increasingly moved away from dos batch and into more of vbscript or wsh scripts.
DOS and batch files was the start of Microsoft's reign on personal computers. To counter Mac's GUI influence, windows was born and later on refined. DOS and batch has mostly been left to collect dust.
