Windows VISTA and MAC are both great operating systems. For most people, I would recommend a MAC because in my opinion, it's easier to work with settings on a MAC. Windows, though, is more customizable. If you just want a computer that's easy to work with, I would say MAC. If you want a computer that you can make more of (and I'd guess I'd better mention that programmers can make their own sidebar gadgets), I would say Windows VISTA. One other thing is that a MAC computer is like $1000, but Windows is mostly cheaper.
It also depends on the applications you want to run; for example if you want to run AutoCAD then you don't have a choice as MAC OS isn't supported. Also, some software companies may traditionally produce newer versions for one platform or another.
Finally(!), if you need to work with other people then this may affect your choice; if you work in a company that uses MAC OS, then it would obviously be simpler for everyone if you followed suit.
