What is black diarrhea?

To start off with, any change from your normal is a cause for concern.

Dark could mean that your food is very well digested. Or, it could be the result of ingestion of dark foods, just as ingestion of some strongly coloured drinks can colour the urine.

Darkness may be present if your system is detoxing a lot of something, it will be dumped in your feces. (Again, like ingested vitamin riboflavin will end up being expelled as a bright yellow colour in your urine)

However, of the most concern: "Black can indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, such as from an ulcer in the stomach or problems in the small intestine."

Do you have any other abnormal symptoms? Make sure you consult a physician, bleeding could indicate cancer in the intestines (but avoid abdominal X-ray examinations).

When fecal matter is of black color, the color indicates rectal bleeding. The bleeding is what would cause the black color in the stools, and this could be due to rectal or colon issues such as colon cancer. In some cases, the color is due to the color of some foods such as black licorice.

I do know that Pepto-Bismol can cause it to turn black. If you haven't taken any, however, then I am not sure.
