A career development plan is a plan to set your future goals for the next 2,3,4... years to help you achieve your goals for the chosen career.

People tend to lose sight of their career path as the years go by. And many never had that career plan to begin with.

Stage 1: Self-Knowledge

The first step in the Career Development Cycle is to develop an understanding of personal values, skills, and interests. Each of these three areas plays a large part in career and life satisfaction. Values determine what is most important, whether that is financial security, altruism, prestige, responsibility, flexibility, or creativity. These values are often a reason for considering a career change in the first place.

Skills and abilities relate to one's strengths in the world of work. A career change may be an opportunity to use a previously underutilized skillset, or a new career field may require the development of new skills. Throughout a lifetime, most people's interests change and develop, which can often lead to desires for a career change. Any career changer needs to develop of complete picture of their values, skills, and interests.

Stage2: Career Exploration

Once an individual has a strong sense of self, the next step is to identify careers that would be an appropriate match. For many, this process starts with a consideration of the current job market. While market research is important, note that the job market is always changing, and career changers should try to identify a career field with longevity. The sometimes difficult process of finding a career to fit interests, values, and skills may take time. Online research into career fields should be augmented with job shadowing for a real life perspective. Once options have been thoroughly considered, a decision should be made.

Stage 3: Career Planning

The career planning stage involves the development of clear goals necessary to make a career transition. Goals most commonly involve acquiring education, specialized training, or experience. Many career fields require educational qualifications or training, such as languages, computer, or medical training. Nearly all career changers will need to gain relevant experience through volunteering, working part-time, or taking temporary roles.

The Career Development Cycle is a useful tool for career changers of any age, education level, or location. By proceeding through each stage, individuals can feel confident in their change.
