What is changed to balance an chemical equation?

Answer:
you need not to change anything to balance an equation , you just need to put coefficients before the substance in order to balance it according to the requirement...
example
NH3 + O2 + CH4 -----> HCN + H2O
it's unbalanced
so in order to balance it , we are supposed to put coefficients
2NH3+3O2+2CH4--->3HCN+6H2O
Now this is a balanced equation,
we balance it in order to conserve the masses
