The black where separated from the whites because of the color of their skin. Also blacks had little rights. The blacks could not fight with whites, play, date, or marry a white person. The civil rights movement changed that so that blacks were able to have the same rights as white people.

Blacks were not treated fairly. They were refused entrance to places of business and employment. They had to fight for the rights that they were legally entitled to for nearly a century because whites for one reason or another, usually out of ignorance and prejudice, found justification to dislike them and disrespect them as equal human beings. As a white man, I cannot comprehend the level of debasement that they endured. I can only imagine my own limited thoughts of it. Out of this was born a movement to demand equal rights in the early 60's to my knowledge.
