Dercums disease, also known as Dercum's Disease or Adiposis Dolorosa, is characterized by painful fatty tissue or lipomas. The main symptom of the disease is generalized or local painful fat with certain inflammatory characteristics. It occurs predominantly in women (only 16% is in men). It is one of the orphan diseases because it occurs in a small percentage of the population. A thorough article describing the disease can be found at http://dercums_data.tripod.com/brorson.html.
