its the history of graphic design! from way back to ww1 posters, bauhaus, great typographers, the design of the grid, the golden section, design pioneers!

i would look up Bauhaus, Josef_Müller-Brockmann, Saul Bass, Paul Rand, Neville Brody, David Carson (urgh) (vaughn oliver - double urgh!) that alone should cover around 80 years up to (and including) the early/mid 90's.

Swiss design has been very influential and is more timeless than some other movements but many countries have great design now.
