In type 1 Diabetes the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach, stops making insulin. Without insulin, the body's cells cannot turn glucose (sugar), into energy. Without insulin the body burns its own fats as a substitute. Unless treated with daily injections of insulin, people with type 1 diabetes accumulate dangerous chemical substances in their blood from the burning of fat. This can cause a condition known as ketoacidosis. This condition is potentially life threatening if not treated.

To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes depend on up to four insulin injections every day of their lives. They must test their blood glucose levels several times daily. The onset of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in people under 30 years, but can occur at any age. About 10-15% of all cases of diabetes are type 1.

Type 1 Diabetes is also referred to as Juvenile Diabetes. Therefore, children are most likely to develop this disease rather than adults. Juvenile Diabetes is completely different than Type 2 Diabetes in origin, though the symptoms can become more similar over time.

I cringe when I hear Juvenile Diabetes, because Type 1 Diabetes is caused by the immune system attacking the insulin producing gland in the pancreas. That means age is not a factor, young adults ages 18-25 may develop Type 1 diabetes. It simply means your body does not produce insulin.

Yes, Type 1 diabetics are diagnosed mostly during early childhood years, however many young adults develop type 1 Diabetes because it is a immune disorder.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system desoys the pancreas' beta cells' ability to produce insulin. Insulin causes cells to take in more glucose from the blood and causes the liver to store glucose as glycogen, but lack of insulin leads to the kidneys removing the glucose along with a lot of water. Since the body ends up using fat for energy instead, the blood becomes more acidic, which disrupts the metabolism of practically all the cells in the body, possibly leading to Heart disease, blindness, nerve and kidney damage, coma, and even death.

A person with type 1 diabetes does not make enough insulin. Because type 1 diabetes is most common in people under 40, it is also sometimes called juvenile diabetes.
